SENATE INVESTIGATES WAR CRIMES IN SYRIA

In a classic case of projection, U.S. Senators introduced a bill to create a “hybrid tribunal” aimed at investigating “war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide in Syria.”

Their bid to bring Syrian President Bashar Assad to “justice” for his unspecified “heinous acts” does not include putting any American government officials on trial for their well-documented atrocities there.

Senator Menendez called it “another step forward to produce that well-crafted strategy that serves American national security interests and responds to a threat against our common humanity and the international order.”

UNITED STATES SEEN AS #1 WORLD THREAT

But a 2007 Financial Times poll of more than 45,000 respondents interviewed in 46 countries found “32% of respondents in five European countries regard the US as a bigger threat than any other state” – distantly followed up by China, Iran, Iraq, and North Korea. 35% of American 16- to 24-year-olds identified their country as the chief danger to stability.”

Majorities in 30 of 46 countries said Washington tended to act unilaterally in foreign affairs without taking the interests of their countries into account. That view was most strongly held (74% or more) by respondents in Sweden, Britain France, Spain, Canada, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, PT, and South Korea.

A 2013 WIN/Gallup International poll on the question: “Which country do you think is the greatest threat to peace in the world today?” found the USA #1 – winning three times the votes of second-place Pakistan. In the Middle East, overwhelming majorities regarded the U.S. and its close ally Israel as the major threats they face – not the U.S.-Israeli favorite: Iran.

"There is also considerable opposition to U.S. and NATO operations in Afghanistan,” the survey reported. “The U.S. image remains abysmal in most Muslim countries in the Middle East and Asia and continues to decline among the publics of America's oldest allies."

The survey also found "a broad and deepening dislike of American values and a global backlash against the spread of American ideas and customs. Majorities or pluralities in most countries surveyed say they dislike American ideas about democracy."

Noam Chomsky said that the big question facing the world is, “Can the United States be contained and other nations secured in the face of the U.S. threat?”

Among key allies in western Europe, the view that the U.S. unilaterally ignores the interests of other countries is deep-rooted.

A 2014 global survey, conducted by WIN/Gallup International, polled residents in 68 countries the United States three-times the threat to world peace than second-place Pakistan.
