Are Wireless Phones Wiping Our Brains?

By William Thomas

A new a brain-scan study published February 22, 2011 in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association shows that a 50-minute cell phone call boosts activity in brain regions where the phone is held.

"The human brain is sensitive to the electromagnetic radiation that is emitted from cell phones," says the study's coauthor Nora Volkow of the National Institute on Drug Abuse in Bethesda, Maryland. She adds, "At this point we do not know what the clinical significance of this particular finding is."

The social significance is huge. By confirming the "non-thermal" effects of everyday cell phone use, the study once again calls into question current North American exposure regulations based solely on preventing wireless devices from burning their users. This is like saying cigarette smoking is harmless as long as you don't burn yourself.

With his awareness of a long and growing roster of researchers who have seen their funding and careers curtailed after finding the "wrong answers" to industry-financed studies - or possibly because more than 2,000 published studies demonstrating the proven risks of cell phone radiation have been censored by mass media in the United States - Volkow goes on to claim: disingenuously. "Researchers don't yet know whether cell phone radiation is dangerous."

Research conducted in Sweden nearly 11 years ago - and confirmed by laboratories in Finland and the USA - has shown that aptly named "cellular" phones begin damaging brain cells within the two-minutes of initiating a conversation on a cell or cordless phone.

Dr. Leif Salford

In 2000, after a 12-year investigation into the effects of cell phone radiation, Professor Leif Salford and his team at Lund University demonstrated that mobile phone radiation opens the blood-brain barrier within two-minutes, allowing blood proteins to enter the brain. Often identified in Alzheimer's autopsies, these clumps of brain proteins can also cause Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, premature aging and Parkinson's Disease.

[Electronics Australia Magazine Feb/00; British Library Net Sept14/03]

In 2003, Dr. Salford and his Swedish colleagues found that cell phone-exposed rats have an "astonishing number of dead neuron cells, actually suffering holes in their brains from the damage."

Dr. Salford went on to show that a single two-hour exposure to a cell phone permanently damages the blood-brain barrier. In each exposure, up to 2% of test animals' brain cells were either damaged or destroyed - including cells in areas of the brain concerned with learning, reasoning, memory, spatial orientation and movement.

Professor Salford concludes that after decades of daily use, cell phone users will suffer drastic negative brain effects, probably in middle age. [Guardian Feb 5/03; wired.com Jan 31/03]

Leif Salford calls these effects, "terrifying." One of the world's foremost cell phone radiation researchers now says that neurons that would normally not become senile until people reached their 60s might now do so when they were in their 30s. [RFSafe.com Nov26/03]

"A whole generation of teenagers face premature senility in the prime of their lives due to the use of mobile phones and new wireless technology," comments RFSafe.

The British medical journal The Lancet has announced that global Alzheimer's rates are "exploding". And that was six years ago. [Lancet Dec 17/05]

Dementia such as Alzheimer's are progressive, degenerative diseases that destroy vital brain cells. There is no cure.

Memory loss is one of the first indications of dementia and is a common side effect of wireless phone use. French researchers have found that abnormal proteins found in Alzheimer's cases always deposit in the hippocampus first. "We are clearly in the middle of an Alzheimer's epidemic," Dr. Mercola comments. In the USA, nearly five-and-half million people suffer the scourge of Alzheimer's, which is now the sixth leading cause of death. There is no known cure. [Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures 2009]

"In the next 20 years, Alzheimer's will affect one in four Americans - more prevalent than obesity and diabetes is today!" says Dr. Mercola. "Can you imagine? The social and economic ramifications of this would be mindboggling." [mercola.com]

-London Independent headline [Independent Sept 14/03]

Like their counterparts south of the border, Canadians are developing dementia at such a rapid rate that dealing with the problem will cost a total of more than $830 billion over the next 30 years. A 2005 study from Sweden's Karolinska Institute estimated that dementia was then costing global economies $315 billion a year in lost productivity and skyrocketing health costs.

"If we do nothing, dementia will have a crippling effect on Canadian families, our health care system and economy," said the Alzheimer Society report, "It is the most significant cause of disability among Canadians over the age of 65."

A September 2010 international report warns that by 2030 almost 66 million people globally will suffer from Alzheimer's disease or related forms of dementia.

The report recommended that all persons over 65 should increase their physical activity by 50%. It did not mention restricting cell phone use or removing cell phone towers from schools, hospitals, office buildings and residential neighborhoods. [Reuters Jan 4/10]

The increase in brain metabolism observed in the cell phone listening experiment was 7%. But cell phones emit more radiation when a person is talking, Lai says. Radiation levels also change depending on the phone model. Radiation levels also increase with the distance to the nearest cell phone tower. The presence of precipitation, or many people are using mobile phones in the same area also causes cell phones and towers to compensate by producing more power - and radiation.

The new JAMA study, which simply held two cell phones - one activated, the other turned off - next to a subject's head did not run similar brain scans on portable phones "users' - despite the many studies cited by the world-leading Bioinitiative Report showing that continuous exposure to electromagnetic radiation from cordless phone cradles in the home and office is even worse than cell phone exposure.

One in six children suffers some neurological disability. The rate of autism has skyrocketed in the last decade. [Boston Globe July 1/05]

Dr. Robert Kane, PhD now states that RF radiation from cell phones and other source "may be associated with the increased incidence of autism: greater than 1 per 100 newborn." Embryos and developing fetuses are now commonly exposed to radiofrequency radiation such as that emitted by the portable cell phone, portable telephone, wireless routers, microwave towers, radars and ultrasound devices. [Medical Hypothesis Feb/04]

Released 17 years ago, the world's first extensive, government-funded report on cell phone radiation called CSIRO discovered that neurons in the soft, thinly protected brains of developing fetuses are extremely sensitive to heat - as well as non-thermal microwave radiation - during their critical initial process of cell division.

"The mother's pelvic structure promotes deep RF (Radio Frequency) radiation penetration and that radiation can be absorbed within the developing embryo or fetus," Australian biomedical expert Dr. Stan Barnett also found.

Fetuses "showed growth retardation" from cell phone exposure, CSIRO reported. Female offspring exhibited impaired learning ability. Males showed hyperactivity. If cell phone radiation kills the baby's brain cells through heat or microwave radiation, "The resulting neural deficit may not be restored," Dr. Barnett warned.

A huge study of 13,000 kids has come to the conclusion that pregnant women who talk on their cells, even as little as twice a day, profoundly impact their child's behaviour and ability to form social relationships. The problem is magnified if the kids themselves use mobile phones before the age of seven."

Dr. Barnett warns that brain functioning may be impaired for life. [CSIRO June 1994]

Paul Doyon was recently telling his Chinese students that there is going to be a brain tumor epidemic in the next 5-10 years.

He proceeded to ask them "How long have you had a cell phone?" Answers were "five years," seven years," "four years" and so on. When he was taking role, he noticed that one of his students had been absent for about five classes. He asked her why and she replied "It is because I have a brain tumour."

Rates of brain tumors among financial executives are shockingly high - and increasingly attributed to intense cell phone use. "I knew four or five people just at my firm who got tumors," the banker said. "Each time, people ask the question. I hear it in the hallways." [Natural News June 20/10]

"Once the damage is created, the damage is irrecoverable - and inherited unchanged, from generation to generation," emphasizes Dr. John Holt. This surgeon turned radiologist has spent 42 years probing cancer causes at the Microwave Therapy Centre in Perth Australia.

Micronuclei are broken fragments of DNA. Their presence indicates that cells can no longer properly repair themselves." [RFSafe.com Nov 2/05]

Because wireless phones cause hotspots in human tissue, the body produces heat shock proteins in an effort to protect and repair overheated cells. "All cancers are the result of genetic damage and the presence of micronuclei in living cells is a premier diagnostic marker for cancer. Doctors treating victims of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster used micronuclei testing to determine the extent of radiation damage," writes former Motorola-researcher Dr. George Carlo.

In 2000, Dr. Joseph Roti, a highly-credentialed scientist who also received sizeable funding from Motorola, also confirmed formation of micronuclei at radiation levels far lower than those emitted by cell phones. Professor Vini Khurana is a top neurosurgeon who has received 14 awards over the past 16 years, has published more than three dozen scientific papers and reviewed more than 100 studies on the effects of mobile phones. Noting that malignant brain tumours represent "a life-ending diagnosis," he warns, "We are currently experiencing a reactively unchecked and dangerous situation."

He fears that "unless the industry and governments take immediate and decisive steps," the incidence of malignant brain tumours and associated death rate will be observed to rise globally within a decade from now, by which time it may be far too late to intervene medically.

This danger has far broader public health ramifications than smoking, Dr. Khurana adds. Three billion people now use the phones worldwide - three-times as many as those who smoke. Smoking kills some five million worldwide each year. [Independent Mar 30/08]

"This is the first paper that really shows there are changes in the brain," says PhD Henry Lai, who coauthored the editorial published in this issue of JAMA.

Not really.

In 1996 Lai and Singh made research history by showing single and double DNA strand breaks in brain cells of rats exposed to 2.45GHz wireless radiation. In 2010, Dr. Henry Lai warned that exposure to the radiofrequency radiation emitted by cell phone towers has been linked to a variety of health problems, including decreased sex drive, headaches, vision problems, and even cancer. [fairwarning.org Nov 9/10]

On August 31, 2007, an international team of scientists, researchers and public health policy professionals calling themselves the BioInitiative Working Group released their report on electromagnetic fields and health. Reviewing decades of medical and scientific studies findings on the effects on people "from power lines, cell phones, and many other sources of EMF exposure in daily life," they documented "serious scientific concerns about current limits regulating how much EMF is allowable."

"Magnetic fields as low as around 2 milligauss or a millionth of a Tesla can produce biological effects. For comparison, using a mobile (cell) phone or a PDA exposes you to magnetic pulses that peak at several tens of microtesla." [BioInitiative July 2007 - see recent update]

More than 3,000 medical doctors and 35,000 individuals who have signed the Freiberger Appeal since it was issued in October 2000 blame ADD and many other inexplicable epidemics on electromagnetic fields emitted by cell and portable phones.

Natural News reports: "The most ambitious attempt to catalogue the health risks of cell phones to date is the industry-funded Interphone study, carried out by researchers from 13 different countries (not including the United States). Although the study has been criticized for selecting data in a way designed to play down the risks of cell phone use, it continues to turn up alarming findings a 300% increased risk of acoustic nerve tumors. The risk of a brain tumor increases by 400% in people who start using a cell phone before the age of 20.

"Other studies, mostly out of Europe, have linked mobile phone and personal digital assistant (PDA) use to DNA damage, sperm death, and brain damage including early-onset dementia. These findings regularly make big news in the international press, but are by and large played down in U.S. media."

More than 40 years ago, U.S. researcher Allan Frey found that non-heating electromagnetic radiation produces biological effects. But when he published a paper showing that microwave radiation could disrupt the functioning of the blood-brain barrier, the Office of Naval Research ordered him to censor his findings or lose funding. (Military personnel are routinely exposed to very high levels of electromagnetic radiation.)

Frey was also the first to discover that while the primary or "carrier" wave of microwave radiation harms health, "the modulated wave that carries the actual data - whether sound, text, pictures or other information transmitted via cell phones or Wi-Fi connections - is far more dangerous. The more data streams carried, the higher the danger," Natural News reports.

As the Bioinitiative report stressed: "It is not the total energy associated with the EMF that is critical, but rather the regular oscillations of the stimulating force." [BioInitiative July 2007 - see recent update]

Highlighting the danger of nearly ubiquitous pulse-modulated wireless today, the Bioinitiative study noted that current "safety" standards ignore modulation - as well rapidly repeating peak exposure "spikes" and the cumulative effects of chronic exposure in Wi-Fi classrooms, for example, or homes near cell phone relay towers.

"Headaches may only be the most obvious indicator of what is going on biologically," Frey warned in the mid-1980s after he stopped testing cell phones on humans because he was encountering frequent complaints of headaches. ["Headaches from Cell Phones: Are They Real?" by Fey 1988]

Speaking of adult brain tumours, Dr. Keith Black, foremost American neurosurgeon, chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and Director of the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute at Cedars-Sinai, and the late Johnnie Cochran's physician remarked to Larry King: "Headaches. You know, one of the most common presenting symptoms." [Larry King Live May 27/08]

"There are very easy solutions that don't cost anything for those who want to play it safe," suggests Nora Volkow. First, she says, "People can limit their time on the phone." What does "limit your time" mean? Cell and portable phone radiation experts say that you call should be under two minutes, at a maximum of one call per month. [ABCs Of Cell Phones And Other Hazards Of The Wireless Age by William Thomas]

"Use the speakerphone option," Vokrow urges next. While limiting direct brain exposure, following this advice can only lead to a proliferation of Wi-Fi and Wi-Max towers - exposing everyone in range to these frequencies. Remember, an 8 Gigahertz W-Max tower is whipping all human brain and body cells within 1,500 feet or further back-and-forth at a rate of 8 billion times per second. This is why DNA strands snap. If both strands of the DNA's helical ladder are broken, they cannot be repaired.

"Or talk with a hands-free device that's connected to the phone with a wire," the study's co-author recommends. This is extremely dangerous advice. Here's why:

Double-strand DNA break from cellphone radiation is permanent

Headsets can greatly increase cell phone radiation hazards.

First, the wire acts as an antenna picking up all ambient electromagnetic radiation in range and channelling it straight into the wearer's ear and brain.

Secondly, if the length of the headset wire happens to match the signal's frequency, the phone may be unwittingly oriented to act as a "wave-guide" -resonating with the signal's wavelength and greatly amplifying its strength.

Thirdly, depending on how the headset wire hangs across the body, it can act as an antenna - significantly increasing cell phone emissions along its entire length. If that wire happens to drape across a pregnant belly, exposure to the fetus is severe.

UK and Israeli newspapers report that this supposedly "safer" arrangement can more than triple the brain's exposure to radiation if the headset wire is hanging straight down - their usual position in use.

Note also that the "hands-free" mobile is going to have to crank out much more power to carry its calls over the extra distance of this wire. This will greatly increase the radiation exposure of everyone in proximity. Even worse, calls from inside a vehicle are going to have to blast away at full power to get all those urgent messages through its steel structure. This is why states that have implemented mandatory "hands-free" phone laws for drivers are seeing no reduction in cell-phone caused accidents. It is not the distraction of talking on cell phones that causes accidents - but the radiation they emit within the vehicle's steel frame that drastically reduce the driver's situational awareness, while increasing reaction times to that of an 80 year-old, cell phone-free driver - who at least can somewhat compensate with all those years of driving experience.

There are in fact just two solutions for those wanting to be "safe”:

        1. Do not use cell or portable phones.

        2. Do not live or work within a half-mile of a cell phone tower.

And what about cell phone radiation "shields"?

If they worked… the phone wouldn't.

1. Avoid the use of cell phones and portable phones.

2. Remove all wireless routers, portable phone cradles and other wireless devices from your home and office.

3. Challenge your mind daily.

4. Odds of developing Alzheimer's are nearly quadrupled in people who are sedentary.

5. Eat plenty of fresh organic blueberries. Their high anthocyanins and antioxidants help guard against Alzheimer's and other neurological diseases.

6. Avoid flu vaccines and other vaccinations as most contain mercury and aluminum.

7. Avoid breakfast cereals. "People who consume foods rich in B12 may reduce their risk of Alzheimer's in their later years," Dr. Mercola advises. "Fortified cereals are most definitely NOT a good source of dietary B vitamins. They also have inorganic iron added. This is the worst type of iron to use as a supplement and it will raise already elevated iron in those that don't need it, like most adult men and postmenopausal women. Elevated iron levels ill actually increase your risk of Alzheimer's." Raw oatmeal is good.

8. Eat plenty of high-quality animal based Omega-3 fats and take Omega-3 flax-oil supplementation. Most fish are today so contaminated with mercury, increased consumption is not recommended - except for sardines, which are high in B12 and small enough to typically be less contaminated, and wild caught (not "farmed") salmon.

9. For more B-12, eat some grass-fed lamb and organic, free-range eggs.

10. Avoid drugs that block the nervous system neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Serotonin inhibitors increase your risk of dementia, Dr. Mercola warns. "These drugs include certain night-time pain relievers, antihistamines, sleep aids, certain antidepressants, medications to control incontinence, and certain narcotic pain relievers." Natural melatonin supplements work well top promote sleep without side-effects. Unlike anti-oxidant vitamins that cannot cross the blood-brain barrier, this safe supplement enters the brain to scrub free radicals before they can damage neurons. The Life Extension Foundation rates melatonin as the top life-extending supplement.
